Hello and welcome to our brand new website! Just one of the changes taking place from 2017.
In January of 2017, a new committee took on the Thurso Town Improvements Association (TTIA) as we know it. We’ve retained the treasured favourites of the traditional celebrations and are trying to modernise other sections. The group have committed to fundraise towards two community projects; The riverside project and The Thurso walk of fame project. We aim to light Thurso river in full so that the path can be utilised all year round. We also hope to create a town walk with local faces on plaques telling the town’s story so locals can feel pride and visitors can gain an understanding of why our town is so special.
In order to achieve this huge task, we’ll be organising fundraising events and looking into funding avenues to help us achieve the goal.
We decided to rest the traditional gala week and queen and try to modernise the community celebration into something new and even more exciting thank usual. We’ve kept many of the favourites which you’d normally expect to see in the gala programme and have decided to run these events over the course of the year. So far, we’ve enjoyed a Teddy Bear’s Easter party, the pub quiz and the ever popular Car treasure hunt. We’ve welcomed over 200 people to these events and are really looking forward to seeing you all at the next one!
The crowning of the gala queen was always a popular part of gala night so we’ve decided to open the competition and change it so that young men and women can be recognised for a particular effort towards their community. The award is called Thurso’s Young Ambassador award and will be presented to the winner on Sunday 25th June.
Our plans for the year are ambitious and we’re eager to get stuck in. If you’d like to join in the fun and either join the committee or register as a volunteer, please get in touch as we’d be thrilled to welcome you to our TTIA madhouse!
